Dear Oneonta Student,
Alcohol misuse is one of the most serious issues facing today’s colleges. The Oneonta Community is committed to confronting this issue with a combination of education and prevention of alcohol-related consequences among our students. We know that about 20% of college students abstain from using alcohol and a substantial percentage drink alcohol in moderation. Specifically, most Oneonta students who choose to drink do so in a low risk manner, generally drinking once a week or less and having 1-5 drinks per week. However, a number of students misuse alcohol and create disruption in their own lives and the lives of other community members.
As a partner in maintaining the highest quality living and learning environment at Oneonta, it is vital that you make informed choices about alcohol and the risks associated with alcohol use. We strive to provide an environment and resources to maximize your opportunity for academic success and experiences that foster personal and social growth. Alcohol abuse incidents jeopardize this goal and negatively impact other students.
Oneonta encourages students to make safe, healthy and legal choices about personal alcohol use and non-use. As such, we believe it is imperative that you have a basic understanding of alcohol-related issues on campus. This 90-minute course focuses on building skills to avoid alcohol-related consequences, learning how to handle alcohol-related emergencies, and developing strategies to help others who struggle with alcohol misuse. We wish you a healthy, positive and successful college experience!”
Sincerely,
Steven R. Perry, Ph.D.
